As I consider my current situation, evaluating where I've been and looking towards where I'm going, I tend to seek out wisdom in different forms. Tonight it's in the form of quotations.
If you would be wealthy, think of saving as well as getting. Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790) An unhurried sense of time is in itself a form of wealth. Bonnie Friedman, in New York Times
I liked both of these. Franklin is classic, and of course his statement is so true. Friedman's I really like actually, for it seems to apply to my situation specifically right now. My job, where I'm living.. stuff I want, always more things on the list... but the more I postpone adjusting my job situation, the longer I postpone moving, the longer I wait to buy my dual 24" LCDs and mounts, new helmet, motorcycle tires, fork seals, crank case, etc etc etc, .. ie the longer I let myself be content with what I have now, the better off I really am. Of course my bank balance grows, but in the long run, the more you can hold out and realize that thigs are just things and that it's all so transitory anyway (the next newest whatever comes out and makes your new-old toy boring) the happier you are. Or at least, the happier I am. My old roommate used to always make fun of my old computers that I used, but besides saving a few thousand over the course of my college career, I never felt the need to compete. And that feeling, that lesson, is worth a lot more now than just a few thousand dollars. |

I can't believe how fast this summer is going.. of course, I've probably written than in my blog for the last 5 or 6 years every summer. (Don't try to look, the blogs are scattered all over the place on my server and mostly unconnected to this site.) The last few months for me have been very busy and crazy. Went to work for a startup company who is still short on paying me... the spent most of the month of July traveling. July 4th weekend
Went to my high school reunion which was pretty cool; was a little sad at the number of people who didn't show up. Seems so petty, but then I guess they will all claim that they "already see or talk to the people that they want to" .. pff. Getting a chance to visit with people who WEREN'T your friends in high school is one of the main functions of a reunion for high school isn't it? I mean.. well, maybe just for me it is that way. Shame on those of you who don't go to your reunions because you either think to high or to little of yourself. July 12th weekend We had a trip scheduled to go to Vegas this weekend for a conference for Autumn. We went and it was an ok experience. I think between the heat and the hard time scheduling events we didn't get as much out of it as some people do. All the noise and chaos isn't really my thing anyway. July 26th weekend I spent about 5 days out in MN for my grandfather's funeral and to visit with family and spend time with everyone who was there for that. It was nice to see some who I hadn't seen in lots of years.. some new cousins who were 5 or 6 that I hadn't really seen before. I started working another contract around the end of June at the same time I was still going into work for MIM, working about 15 hours a week which I maintained for most of July. The last week of July they asked me to expand it to 32 hours a week which I've been doing since. I'm using my Friday's to play catch up and try to get some PHP/Flex written for a few different websites and to put some work into other projects I'm trying to maintain. Starting to feel a bit like my grandpa was fond of saying; "I don't believe God intended for us to be this busy in life, but I just don't know what I'd cut out." |
